| Wheels on Wyandotte Car Show | The First Annual Wheels on Wyandotte Car Show held Saturday, September 17, 2011was a huge success. All proceeds from the days events were donated to the Ronald McDonald House of Southwestern Ontario. We had 73 cars registered for the show which made for a great day. In addition to the car show we held a Raffle for a 50" Plasma TV. Congratulations to Rob Turner from Windsor who won the TV.
Other events for the day included a Hoola Hoop Contest, Pet Contests and a Cake Decorating Contest. This was the first time that we were able to close Wyandotte Street completely, which provided the room to showcase the cars and our other events. Thank you to the Windsor Parade Corporation, City of Windsor and Windsor Police Services for their assistance with the road closure.
We are looking forward to Wheels on Wyandotte 2012 which will be held Saturday, September 15, 2012. Plan to be a part of a great show. Dunlevy wanting to maintain comradeship of men who served in the war and to look after their welfare, called a meeting at the Riverside Town Hall in 1934 (exact date not known). Approximately 50 returned soldiers and veterans of other branches attended this first meeting. After some discussion it was determined that the group would be called the Riverside War Veterans Association, and Comrade George Coates was elected President pro tem. The group then decided to affiliate with a national organization, the Canadian Legion and at this time P.B. Dunlevy was elected as Branch President. Even though some of the meetings were held at the Riverside Town Hall, most were held in the homes of its members.
Branch 255 has seen a number of meeting locations starting with the Riverside Town Hall, the William Furlong home at Ford Blvd. and Riverside Drive (1935), and the St. Clair Hotel (1935). In 1936 the C.C.F. Party in Windsor had premises near the corner of Jefferson and Wyandotte and the building was for sale for $800. The branch could not raise the money; however, arrangements were made for the Branch to occupy the building in return for paying the annual taxes of $25.00. In 1937 the Branch moved to 1533 Ottawa Street which was their home for just over two years. Finally the land for the present location 5645 Wyandotte Street East was purchased from the proceeds of a number of events, raffles, and dances. With this hard earned money in hand, plans were drawn up and the clubroom was built. The Grand Opening was held on Friday June 30, 1939, and the building was to become known as the Colonel E. S. Wigle Branch 255 of the Canadian Legion, British Empire Service League.
The Great War Veterans had come a long way, considering the depression, lack of money, growing families and another war looming darkly in the future. During the Second World War years, with the dedication of the Ladies Auxiliary, the branch provided parcels, cigarettes and other needed supplies to the husbands, sons and daughters in the service along with prayers for it all to end.
After the Second World War and the Korean War, the branch saw a steady increase in membership. Riverside was one of the fastest growing areas in the Windsor, and in a few years, Branch 255 became the largest branch in Windsor. Sons, daughters and spouses were accepted into the membership which increased the numbers. The Ladies Auxiliary has always played a key role within the Legion through their acts of kindness and generosity of time and talent.
In 1958, the Branch, with limited funds erected a Cenotaph as a Milestone of the Achievements of the Legions history. This was dedicated during the celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Legion, September 4, 5, 6 & 7, 1959. Mr. R. C. Pruefer, Contractor offered his services for the construction of the Cenotaph. When the cheque to cover the cost of the Cenotaph construction was presented to Mr. Pruefer, he promptly returned it and this cheque was then put into the Poppy Fund. Riverside Public Utilities Commission, Riverside Parks Board and the Riverside Board of Works all contributed to the placement and lighting of the Cenotaph.
The Legion continues to stand by their original commitment of assisting veterans and their families at times of need. They have not forgotten the reason why this Branch was formed and the many individuals who gave their lives in conflicts throughout the world.
Today, the Legion has open membership and invites all citizens to join and participate in the many activities at the Club. You may have noticed that our own Riverside area has also been vandalized . It is done without permission and is also against the law. Graffiti sends the signal that nobody cares, attracting other forms of crime and street delinquency to the neighbourhood. It also decreases the residence and business feeling of safety and may also decrease property value. Cleaning graffiti is very costly and time consuming. Let's all make graffiti our responsibility by reporting to the police any wrong doing that one may find suspicious. Together as a community hopefully we can combat this act of vandalism and keep Riverside a safe place to live and perform business. | | Date Posted : 7/19/2007 | | . . . . . . . . . . | | We are proud to support the Riverside Baseball Centre | | www.riversidebaseball.com | | Date Posted : 7/19/2007 | | . . . . . . . . . . |
